DUT students who threatened to ‘moer’ cops and guards dispersed with stun grenades

In groups of a dozen at a time‚ protesting Durban University of Technology students barrelled out of the security gate at the ML Sultan Campus to hurl rocks‚ stones and pieces of bricks at police on Tuesday morning.

For about 10 minutes this continued‚ as wave after wave of students launched the projectiles into the air and across Market Road. Some were aimed at a 15-strong media contingent.

And then police responded.

Two stun grenades were fired‚ dispersing the students. They moved through the campus‚ forcing students towards the Curries Fountain Sports Centre. The students scattered back towards the Steve Biko Campus they had gathered at earlier in the morning.

It was unclear if the students were planning on regrouping.

Economic Freedom Fighters-aligned student leader Bonginkhosi Khanyile earlier on Tuesday morning told gathered students that they needed to “moer” police and private security company Mi7‚ whom he accused of being heavy-handed.

He repeated this call about half an hour before students and police clashed.
