An early morning robbery at a Port Elizabeth shopping mall turned into a car chase all the way to Uitenhage where a suspect was arrested and his crew’s stolen loot was recovered.
A 21-year-old man is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court today after he, and four other men, allegedly robbed security personnel at the Baywest Mall at gunpoint yesterday morning.
They then sped off in a stolen car and crashed in Uitenhage with the police hot on their heels.
Baywest general manager Troy Zunckel said five robbers, with at least one firearm between them, accessed the offices of Interpark, the company that manages the mall’s paid parking system.
Four Interpark employees were threatened and ordered to lie down inside the office and the only man among them was tied up.
The robbers demanded the cash from the paid parking machines.
“As the incident unfolded, our security team in the CCTV control room witnessed what was happening and the police was alerted.
The police arrived as the robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of money, Zunckel said.
No one was injured during the incident, which was followed by a car chase after various police units went into action.
