Hundreds of supporters of the Bay’s only hope in the Idols SA 2016 competition gathered at the St Thomas High School auditorium in Gelvan Park yesterday to root for 19-year-old Bevin Samuels.
The theme of last night’s show was ‘90s R&B, and Samuels decided to slow down the tempo, performing Angel by Robbie Williams.
Samuels thanked all those who had voted for him so far.
“Thank you guys so, so much for voting for me. To each and everyone who believes in me, I really appreciate it so much and I promise to work much harder and may God bless you,” he said.
In the judges’ commentary, which traditionally follows performances, Gareth Cliff was indifferent to Samuels’s song choice, saying it might affect his vote count: “I don’t think this is the best song choice for you this evening, and I think it might cost you a lot of votes,” Cliff said.
“Despite the performance, vocally you handled it very well.”
While all the judges echoed Cliff’s sentiments, Unathi Msengana encouraged Samuels to listen to his audience and give them what they wanted.
Samuels, whose performance will now be judged by the show’s audience, will learn his fate next weekend.
With the Eastern Cape’s hopes resting on Samuels’s shoulders, his fans can support him by voting via SMS and sending the number 05 to 37400.
