A student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus has been shot and injured‚ reportedly by police officers‚ as violent clashes erupted on Thursday morning.
According to a fellow student‚ Zinhle Masangwana was inside the Malherbe Residence building when police officers stormed the building.
They then allegedly opened fire‚ hitting Masangwana‚ a science student‚ in the right arm. She was carried from the building by fellow students‚ who claimed that police had used live rounds.
The nasty looking wound is clearly visible in a video that also shows paramedics treating her near the scene of the shooting as fellow students shout‚ “This was not a rubber bullet‚” and “She was not striking”.
Police and students had been involved in clashes all morning‚ with students moving in small groups and then dispersing before regrouping in different locations.
Students were also spraying fire extinguishers to create clouds of vapour that obscured officers’ view of them and their activities. They were also stoning police.
At midday‚ about 300 students had stormed the main Pietermaritzburg campus.
This is a developing story.
