Students at the University of the Witwatersrand plan to storm campus and pull students out of class in an attempt to shut the institution down.
This followed Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande’s announcement on Monday morning that universities must determine the level of fee adjustments for 2017 themselves‚ with the proviso that this should not be above 8%.
Students had listened to parts of the announcement before they were informed of the outcome by incoming SRC president Kefentse Mkhari.
“Comrades‚ we aren’t going to entertain that 8%. What we want is simple. We want free education now. Not then. We are shutting down.”
Students are now marching through the university’s Johannesburg campus to “conscientise students” who are still in class‚ one student leader said.
The crowd chanted “on your marks‚ get set‚ we are ready for free education” as they marched.
One student in the crowd said that classes would be stopped. When asked what he meant‚ he said: “You will see.”
