Rivalry suspected in bizarre attack on racing pigeon

What is thought to be a serious case of rivalry has left a racing pigeon with an obscenity written on its shaved chest and its beak and eyes coloured with red and blue marker pen.

Also plucked of its tail feathers and tethered to a black plastic bag, the pigeon – with the word p*** written on it – was first spotted last week. It is now in a safe place.

The bird, which according to Eastern Province Pigeon Union (EPPU) racing secretary Bertram Meyer is a basic racing pigeon, was first spotted near Builders Warehouse on Buffelsfontein Road a week ago.

Animal Anti-Cruelty League inspector Beverley Rademeyer said she was first notified about a pigeon in distress with a black plastic bag tied to its foot last week.

“[Then] on Saturday afternoon, I received a call from a friend who had seen it in Westering,” she said.

On Sunday, she received a message that the pigeon had been spotted in Newton Park.

Only once Rademeyer was finally able to catch the bird later that day was the full extent of the abuse evident.
