Family argument ends in child’s head being slammed onto floor
A Port Elizabeth mother watched in horror as her four-month-old baby was slammed to death against a floor yesterday afternoon in an incident sparked by a family argument.
Shortly after the incident, the little girl’s mother, Melanie Ruiters, 25, stood outside her home wrapped in her baby’s blanket which she clutched to her chest.
The traumatised mother battled to speak but managed to say: “I saw it – I watched him smash my baby.”
She then burst into tears, saying she could not talk any more.
According to witnesses, Chante’s father, Angelo Hendricks, had had an argument. The baby was then picked up by her legs and her head smashed into the floor.
The mother, the witnesses said, was screaming before she ran from the room and fell to the floor crying.
According to officials on the scene, Hendricks, 21, who is now under police guard in hospital, was later caught hiding out in a house adjacent to his home in Loyiso Street, Kuyga, at about 2pm.
Shocked family members said the mother had also allegedly been attacked.
They said there was a history of violent outbursts.
