Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan stopped short of expressing full confidence in SA Airways chairwoman Dudu Myeni when cornered by the opposition in parliament yesterday.
DA MP Alf Lees asked Gordhan why the Treasury had opposed Myeni’s reappointment as SAA board chair.
In doing that, Lees gave credence to a longstanding rumour that the Treasury, with Gordhan as its political head, did not support the reappointment of Myeni, who is seen as being very close to President Jacob Zuma.
Gordhan answered that such decisions included compromises and settlements.
IFP MP Mkuleko Hlengwa then asked Gordhan directly whether he had full confidence in Myeni. He said he had full confidence in the SAA board as a team.
When IFP chief whip Narend Singh asked Gordhan to answer Hlengwa’s question, he said the chairwoman was not all-powerful and had to work as part of a team.
