Seven-year-old Sonia Payi, whose body was found on Monday, died as a result of electrocution.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said a postmortem also revealed that the little girl had been raped.
Sonia was abducted while on her way to a shop on Saturday night.
Her body was found in a field in Struanway in New Brighton, on Monday.
The area where her body was found is well-known as the site of numerous illegal electrical connections.
It is not yet clear how Sonia was electrocuted.
This morning, Sonia’s family told The Herald that they did not want to know how their little girl had died, as thinking about it was simply too painful.
No arrests have yet been made.
