Three men arrested for hijacking

Three men who allegedly hijacked a car by threatening to stab the driver with a bottle neck were caught within five minutes of the attack.

Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said that the 57-year-old driver was allegedly sitting in his Toyota Conquest with two women when three men ambushed them at about 11:15pm on Sunday night.

“The man was allegedly sitting in the car with two female friends in Eagle Drive, Mountain View in Uitenhage. They were all drinking inside the vehicle when the three men approached them,” she said.

“The driver was forced out of the car and threatened with a bottle neck. As the vehicle sped off with the three suspects inside, a member of the public alerted the police after hearing screams for help.”

Swart said that fortunately a police vehicle was patrolling a few streets away and cut the suspects off as they were speeding down the road. “All three men aged between 19 and 25 years of age were arrested,” she said.

The suspects are due to appear in the  Uitenhage Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
