The Fees Commission hearing held in East London yesterday had to be suspended after students stormed into the city hall, where the hearing was being held, questioning the credibility of the consultations.
Police had to be called in to escort commission chairman Judge Jonathan Heher out of the council chambers.
About 30 minutes into his presentation, Fort Hare vice-chancellor Mvuyo Tom was disrupted by about 200 students from different universities who entered the council chamber.
At the entrance, they were requested to remain quiet and to take seats. Amid later chaotic scenes, a student got to a microphone and said the commission was a waste of time and that students did not recognise the commission and Heher.
Heher tried to leave the hall, but students tried to stop him. Some commission officials blocked the students and shielded Heher until he was able to walk out.
Police then rushed in and the students were escorted out. The commission then began a few hours later.
