A matriculant at Strelitzia Secondary School in Isipingo was killed after being hit by a car on Friday afternoon‚ and two of her schoolmates severely injured.
A representative of the school‚ about 25km south of Durban‚ confirmed the incident.
“We are devastated at what happened‚” he said.
According to reports on a community forum‚ the “reckless” driver of the vehicle ploughed into the girls as they were heading home after school.
Alpha Alarms‚ a security company operating in the area‚ posted on Facebook that the girls had been leaving school after writing a trial exam. Their identities have not yet been revealed.
“A fatal accident that occurred on the corner of Lotus Drive and Acalypha Crescent‚ Isipingo‚ a short while ago has tragically claimed the life of a female teen‚ while two other girls sustained injuries and were transported to hospital. According to police‚ a male driver is in custody and a case of culpable homicide is under investigation. Reports suggest that the learner died on impact.
Police are still on scene‚” the company posted at 1.30pm.
Confirmation of the arrest and exact details of the incident form police was not immediately available.
The incident has again highlighted the risks faced by children who walk to school. It comes a day after a schoolgirl was killed crossing Florida Road in Durban‚ seemingly by a speeding car.
The Florida Road Urban Improvement Team‚ which is aimed at improving security in the popular entertainment precinct‚ said that because the area is a busy pedestrian node‚ more needed to be done to ensure people were safe.
“This tragedy highlights the urgency not only of the re-planning of the road [into a pedestrian zone]‚ but of implementing pedestrian-focused interventions such as planned traffic calming speed measures‚” the organisation said.
