Emotions ran high when family and friends gathered at the Port Elizabeth airport to see off Bay Idols hopeful Bevin Samuels yesterday.
Samuels, 19, of Gelvandale, is the youngest contestant to make it into the live show rounds of this year’s competition.
The Idols hopeful was overcome with emotion when supporters, wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with his face and the words Team Bevin, arrived holding a banner.
“I didn’t expect this much attention. It makes me thankful,” Samuels said.
“The reality of this journey just sank in this morning, and it made me realise I need to show South Africa I have what it takes.”
He broke down in tears as he hugged his friend, former Idols SA contestant Alton Zakay, goodbye.
Zakay, 24, also of Gelvandale, worked with Samuels and accompanied him to his audition in Cape Town.
He said: “Bevin is an extremely hard worker. When he [asked] me to help him prepare for the show I couldn’t not help him.
