The Oscar Pistorius case is back in court Friday as state prosecutors seek permission to appeal his six-year jail sentence.
Pistorius‚ who shot Steenkamp dead through a toilet door on Valentine’s Day in 2013‚ claiming he mistook her for an intruder‚ was initially convicted of manslaughter. But the charge was later upgraded to murder and he was sentenced to an effective six years in jail.
In July, the National Prosecuting Authority said that the sentence of six years imprisonment handed down by Pretoria High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa was ‘shockingly too lenient and has accordingly resulted in an injustice and has the potential to bring the administration of justice into disrepute’.
It will be the second time prosecuting authorities would seek to have a decision by Masipa reviewed after they successfully petitioned the Supreme Court of Appeal to overturn the culpable homicide verdict and five-year sentence she originally gave the Paralympic athlete.
