Residents are urged to use water sparingly this week as Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be shutting down the Churchill pipeline for repair work.
The pipeline, which gets water from the Churchill Dam, feeds a third of the city.
Thousands of litres of water have been gushing out of the pipeline for the past two months, at the same spot fixed last year on the west side of the Maitlands River.
Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said a joint seal on the larger pipe had failed, causing the leak.
The repair work will start today and will be completed by Thursday.
Although work will only be done on one of the two pipelines, the second one does not have the capacity to supply the normal demand for water.
Mniki said it was imperative that all residents used water sparingly while repairs were being done.
