A foreign sailor in a critical condition was rescued during a sea rendezvous with a bulk carrier 17.5km off the coast of Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) deputy station commander for Port Elizabeth Justin Erasmus said a rescue crew‚ accompanied by an Eastern Cape government EMS paramedic‚ responded to the emergency.
The 35-year-old sailor from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was aboard the 270m bulk carrier Vega Dream. He was suffering from an intestinal illness and had become unconscious.
He was given emergency medical treatment aboard the ship and then lowered‚ in a Stokes basket stretcher‚ onto the sea rescue craft and taken ashore.
He was taken in a serious but stable condition by ambulance to hospital.
