The man accused of the murder of ANC councillor Buyisile Mkavu was found guilty of murder today at the Port Elizabeth High Court.
Bongani Cagwe has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Mkavu in 2014.
Mkavu was shot dead in his car while leaving the home of former Uitenhage ANC councillor Lucky Vumazonke who had died a week before Mkavu was shot, after an illness.
Cagwe of Khayelitsha in Uitenhage, walked up to Mkavu’s vehicle on August 2, 2014 and shot him in the chest.
A friend of Mkavu, who was also in the vehicle at the time, witnessed the shooting.
The ANC’s Zandisile Qupe welcomed the judgment.
“We are happy today that the judge has been able to pass the sentence of life imprisonment for the gruesome and brutal murder of comrade Mkavu,” Qupe said.
