An injured seaman had to be evacuated from a passing ship near Port Elizabeth on Friday afternoon‚ the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
The 35-year-old Filipino sailor had apparently fallen down stairs on the bulk carrier MV Arabella‚ injuring his back and leg‚ earlier in the day.
The vessel‚ which was sailing from Mombasa in Kenya to the Texan port of Corpus Christi on the US Gulf coast‚ was requested to head towards the nearest port which was Port Elizabeth‚ where an NSRI sea rescue craft rendezvoused with the carrier.
“The sea rescue craft arrived on the scene at 14h00 in choppy seas with a 25 knot gusting South Westerly wind and the patient was stabilised and secured into a stokes basket stretcher and transferred onto the sea rescue craft and brought to the sea rescue base in Port where he was loaded into an EC Government Health EMS ambulance and transported to hospital in a stable condition for further treatment‚” Justin Erasmus‚ NSRI Port Elizabeth deputy station commander, said.
MV Arabella then continued on her voyage‚ he added.
