Eastern Cape MPL Christian Martin has lodged an official complaint against DA MPL Athol Trollip for “interfering” while firefighters were extinguishing a blaze in Windvogel, Port Elizabeth.
Trollip, who is also the DA’s Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate, was pictured assisting firefighters on Saturday, carrying a hose to help douse the fire.
In a letter of complaint to speaker of the provincial legislature, Noxolo Kiviet, Martin said Trollip had abused his powers and had brought the legislature into disrepute.
“Hereby receive my official complaint regarding Hon Athol Trollip interfering with firefighters executing their duty at a house burning in the northern areas over the weekend of 11 June 2016.
“This [honourable] member… has a tendency for political motive other than assisting as other citizens do by watching how lives are saved.
“He always interferes with trained state essential service staff, taking over there responsibility.
“I would, hereby, want this matter to be investigated…” Martin wrote.
DA Mandela Bay councillor Sandra Fillis, who responded on Trollip’s behalf as she was at the scene at the time, said Trollip acted “instinctively” as the DA was the first to arrive on the scene.
“As a caring Bay resident, Athol acted instinctively by dousing the flames firstly with buckets of water, and then with a hose found lying on the ground nearby.
“When lives are at risk, the more hands that can help, the better.
“It is preposterous that an ANC public representative would rather see people’s houses burn down than them get help to save their homes.
“Where was Christian Martin while this house was burning?” Fillis said.
