NSRI aids stricken fishing boat near Mossel Bay

The National Sea Rescue Institute had to rush to the aid of a stricken fishing boat that was reported to be taking on water about seven nautical miles south of Mossel Bay on the Western Cape’s southern shoreline on Monday morning.

The NSRI said its Mossel Bay duty crew were alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) shortly before 9am following a request for assistance from the 12-metre fishing boat Melissa Kelly‚ with 6 crew onboard.

“The Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services responded to the sea rescue base in Mossel Bay to provide an additional water extrication pump and the Sea Rescue craft Rescue 15 and Vodacom Rescuer II were launched carrying the extra water extrication pump.

“The fishing boat Uma Dala‚ at sea in the area at the time‚ also went to the assistance of Melissa Kelly.

“On NSRI's arrival on the scene the fishing boat Uma Dala was in attendance and the crew onboard Melissa Kelly reported to have managed to stop the inflow of water and although reporting to be safe and out of danger NSRI rescue swimmers were put aboard to check and finding all in order the Uma Dala towed the Melissa Kelly to Mossel Bay harbour safely and without incident and no further assistance was required‚” the NSRI said in a statement.
