SABC fires 123 employees‚ citing medical scheme fraud

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is dismissing 123 employees‚ with immediate effect‚ after an investigation into medical aid fraud‚ the state broadcaster said on Tuesday.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said in a statement the decision followed an intensive investigation into allegations of medical aid fraud.

"Following this process‚ the outcome of the respective cases‚ was such that the Corporation was left with no other choice but to terminate the employment contracts‚ as the finding of guilt for dishonesty is regarded in a serious light‚" he said.

Initially when the allegations were made‚ approximately 200 employees were implicated. "However‚ through further interrogation the number was significantly reduced‚" Kganyago said.

SABC Chief Operations Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng commented: “The SABC remains committed to rooting out corruption and fraud and we take such cases seriously”.
