TruFM attracts top DJ

Umhlobo Wenene loses Blaq Maci after eight years with the station

YET another Umhlobo Wenene FM DJ is leaving the station to join TruFM. Nokubonga Blaq Maci will join TruFM from April 1. She will present Mid-Morning Blend – a lifestyle and magazine show that airs daily from 9am to noon.

Known as Blaq to her legions of fans, the DJ’s Sunday gospel show Seza Umphefumlo has more than a million listeners tuning in.

She will join Zikho Mgayi as a co-host on Mid-Morning Blend.

Maci’s move comes just after former Umhlobo Wenene DJ Luks Gidane also migrated to TruFM. He started at the beginning of this month.

Maci said she was leaving the station for TruFM as she felt there was more space for her on air on a fulltime basis.

“I still want to make an impact on air and I feel TruFM is a great platform for me to do that. It is a vibrant station that is growing and I want to be part of that,” she said.

Maci, who has been with Umhlobo Wenene for eight years, said she had learnt a lot at the station.

She would take away one very important lesson – “the basics and simplicity of being on radio”.

“I have a lot of memories with Umhlobo, but there is one that stands out – when I heard my current show had reached a million listeners.

“I will miss the people that I worked with as I had the pleasure of working with awesome people,” Maci said.

Maci started her radio career at Border Tech FM while studying towards a national certificate in broadcasting.

Thereafter she joined Bay FM in 2003, followed by CKI FM in 2005.

Umhlobo Wenene station manager Phumzile Mnci said Maci’s show was aired once a week as she had a fulltime job as an air traffic controller.

He described Maci as a humble person who loved her job and was a hard worker and a team player.

TruFM station manager Thobeka Buswana expressed her excitement at Maci joining the station.

“The station is aggressively working on reclaiming its place in the lives of listeners through a number of intervention projects,” she said.

This had seen the station reaching towns and cities across the province.

“Blaq is joining a team that is well on its way to its former glory and her brand will assist in bringing the needed audiences,” Buswana said.

Azola “Miss V” Vanda will move from Mid-Morning Blend to join Brian Ndevu on Tru Breakfast on weekdays from 6am to 9am.

Abo Manka will move from Tru Breakfast to Joyride on weekdays and Tsepo Nontyi will produce the show.
