Kaaimans sample results still awaited

ALMOST a week after samples were taken to test for the presence of deadly bacteria in the Kaaimans River, the Eden District Municipality is still awaiting the results.

This comes after 81-year-old Frans Heunis, from Wilderness Heights on the Garden Route, died on February 5 of major organ failure following an infection caused by dangerous waterborne bacteria called vibrio vulnificus.

His family believe he contracted the bacteria through a wound sustained while swimming in the river several days before his death.

The municipality’s manager for strategic services, Melanie Wilson, said they had expected the test results back by Friday last week.
