Electrical short causes U'hage water plant shutdown

AN electrical supply problem at the Groendal (Kabah) Water Treatment Works in Uitenhage has caused the plant to shutdown, according the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

“This treatment works supplies the Western parts of Uitenhage as well as areas south of Caledon Street. Reservoir levels are critically low and some areas are already without water,” municipal spokesman Kupiod Baron said.

The electricity and energy directorate, plant maintenance as well as contractors are on site and the supply should be restored later today.

All available water tankers have been deployed and an emergency alternative supply is in use.

“It will take some time for reservoirs to fill once the supply is restored but all areas should have water by tomorrow,” Baron added.

Affected areas include: Alexander Park Industrial, De Mist, Dr Brawn, Eric Dodd, Uitenhage Central, Curry, Cape Road Industrial, Jubilee Park and Gerald Smith.

Other areas are Allanridge, Thomas Gamble, Mountain View, Rosedale, Kamesh, Tiryville and parts of parts of Kabah and McNaughton.
