Policeman treated after shooting himself in leg

A PORT Elizabeth policeman was admitted to hospital yesterday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

The incident happened at the Public Order Policing offices in Struanway, Struandale, at about 1pm.

Officials on the scene said the constable, 33, was travelling in a vehicle when he took the firearm out of his holster to get out of the vehicle.

“As he pulled the firearm out of his holster, he shot himself in the leg.

“It was a freak accident,” an officer who witnessed the incident said.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci confirmed the incident.

“The constable was deployed at Operation Fiela when a shot went off and the member was accidentally shot in the lower body,” she said.

“He was rushed to hospital for medical attention and is in a stable condition.”

Soci would not elaborate.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are being established by police,” she said.
