School vandals take computers

A PORT Elizabeth school – already faced with a limited budget and shortage of teachers – was vandalised on Monday night and five computers stolen.

Bethvale Primary School principal Cedric van Vuuren said: “We do not have proper security or fencing and anyone can just enter the school to rob us.” The northern areas school is in Bloemendal. “This is going to have a major effect on our pupils because we had only 25 computers and they already had to share during class.”

He said the robbers gained entry to the laboratory by breaking through two sets of burglar bars.

“We actually do not know how they got past the last set of bars because there is such a small gap. “They must have sent a child in through the bars.” He said the school had established the computer laboratory in 2007 and had replaced some computers only last year.

Van Vuuren said the burglars had also broken into the Grade R classroom and taken stationery, but were unable to get into the school’s tuck shop.
