Suspect arrested in NMMU students kidnapping and rape ordeal

A 25-year-old man will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s court on Tuesday on charges of rape, kidnapping and robbery.

On Sunday the FCS unit in Port Elizabeth received information that the suspect was a passenger in a taxi near Njoli Square, New Brighton. Information was immediately followed up and the suspect arrested.

This follows an incident on October 19 when two Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students, aged 18 and 20, boarded a taxi from NMMU to town.

The taxi driver failed to stop at their destination but instead drove them to Kwazakhele. One of the victims was allegedly raped before the driver brought them back to town.

He  then drove with them around town before taking them back to Kwazakhele where both females were allegedly raped at a house. The following morning they were dropped off at a bus stop.

They reported the case at New Brighton police station.
