Court told of communication to track down woman’s whereabouts before killing

Chilling details of a witness’s final phone call before she was gunned down outside her workplace came to light in a Port Elizabeth court yesterday, as a policeman told how he had been on the hunt for one of the alleged triggermen who had earlier escaped from prison.

Colonel Willie Mayi, of the hijacking unit, told the Port Elizabeth High Court he was assigned to a task team investigating the assassination of state witnesses in 2013.

Mayi said he knew the accused – Ndumiso Booi, 24, Mzolimo Makisi, 33, and Mawethu Khaka, 29. He said, at that stage, they had been on the hunt for Makisi, who had escaped from St Albans Prison.

He said a fourth accused, Thandeka Mange, 28, who was Booi’s girlfriend, had been shot dead outside her Kwazakhele home shortly after he interviewed her in connection with the June 2013 murder of a state witness.

Zanele Jonga, 32, had been shot dead two months earlier after she pointed Booi out in a lineup at St Albans Prison as one of the men who had allegedly hijacked her and her boss, Dr Oluwatoyin Odufuwa, as he drove her home in October 2012.

The hijackers made off with their personal belongings and the VW Polo they had been travelling in.
