Four-year-old airlifted after being flung through windscreen

A four-year-old boy is fighting for his life in a Durban hospital after being flung through the front window of his parents’ car in a horrific accident north of Durban on Tuesday morning.

The child was airlifted by the Air Mercy helicopter service to the specialist Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in a critical condition.

Paul Herbst of IPSS Rescue said the child’s father was driving towards Waterloo on the M27 when another vehicle pulled out in front of it. Pictures from the accident scene show that the child’s body punched a hole in the windscreen of the vehicle.

“Another vehicle from a farm crossroad crossed in front of the vehicle [and] the two vehicles T-boned each other‚” said Herbst.

“The mom was in the back seat with the toddler on her lap‚ unrestrained. Due to the force‚ the baby went through the windscreen from the back of the vehicle‚ sustaining multiple critical injuries to the face and head.”

The mother and father both sustained moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. – TMG Digital/The Times
