Woman appears in court for stealing baby

A 30-year-old woman appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for stealing a new-born baby.

The woman was arrested after police followed up information about her whereabouts in the KwaNyuswa area‚ Hillcrest‚ on Monday.

“On 13 August 2016 at about 10am‚ the victim was in one of the hospitals in Durban after giving birth to her baby boy.

“She was approached by the suspect who offered to assist her as the victim’s family did not want to come and fetch her from hospital.

“The victim and the suspect went out from hospital and proceeded to Durban where the suspect offered food to the victim‚” the police said.

“Later the suspect allegedly gave money to the victim to go and buy airtime while the suspect was waiting with her baby boy at a taxi rank. When the victim returned back to them‚ she noticed that both her baby and the suspect were missing.”

A case of child stealing was opened at Durban Central police station for further investigation.

“The suspect was traced to the KwaNyuswa area and the child was found alive."

The woman was charged with child stealing and the baby handed over to her mother after she was taken for a medical check-up‚ the police said.
