The Herald under fire from party for questioning timing of event

The Herald came under fire from the ANC at the press conference with the farmworkers when the reporter questioned the timing of the event – just 11 days before the election.

ANC national spokesman Zizi Kodwa accused the newspaper of advancing the DA’s agenda.

The reporter asked the workers: “Why now? Coming here [to Port Elizabeth], who paid for you? Or did you come on your own?

“Are you not doing this because Trollip is running for [mayor]?

“Are you not being used by the ANC to gain voters?”

One of the workers, Richman Ngalo, said on behalf the group: “I am not going to answer the question how we came here or who paid for us.

“That I must tell you how did I come to PE, what car did I drive, where did I sleep. It is very sensitive for me to answer.

“This is not about the elections. We don’t care who people vote for here in PE.

“We are here to talk about our problems. Anyone who wants to help us, we welcome them.

“We have been going around looking for someone to help us.

“I even wrote on [DA leader] Mmusi Maimane’s wall telling him about our situation, [but] he did not respond.
