The ANC's Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral candidate Danny Jordaan this morning accepted the challenge of leading the metro, saying it will be transformed in the next five years.

Addressing a capacity-filled Wells Estate community hall, Jordaan reiterated his stance on working to alleviate poverty.

Jordaan said the recently passed R10.8-billion pro-poor budget would go a long way in, among other things, ridding the metro of the bucket system, which he said still affects about 23000 residents.

"We must get rid of the bucket system. We must roll up our sleeves and work hard," he said, to loud applause.

Jordaan was speaking shortly after treasurer Zweli Mkhize officially introduced him to residents as mayoral candidate for the metro.

Members of the party's national executive committee who were present - including secretary general Gwede Mantashe and sports minister Fikile Mbalula - split up after the morning's event, going on a door-to-door campaign trail across the metro's various wards.
