Man killed in similar shooting 24hrs after 12-year-old girl

A Port Elizabeth man was shot dead in his Gelvandale home this morning, in an incident eerily similar to another – just 24 hours before – in which a 12-year-old girl was shot dead and her father wounded.

The 38-year-old man was shot in his house, in what police suspect is a gang-related incident, after two men kicked open the front door of his home as he and his wife slept.

In the other incident, Aliya “Angel” Tee, 12, was shot dead by men who had forced open the door of their Barberry Street, Bethelsdorp home.

The house is directly across the road from where notorious gangster Donovan “Staal” Berry, 47, was gunned down on the pavement last month.

Aliya’s father, Edmund, 43, who was shot while trying to fend off the attackers is still receiving treatment at Livingstone Hospital.

It is suspected Tuesday night’s shooting was a witness assassination aimed at ensuring those responsible for Berry’s death walked free.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said this morning’s shooting happened shortly after midnight.

While she confirmed that police suspected it was gang-related, they did not believe it was linked to the murder of Aliya, a Strelitzia Primary School Grade 7 pupil.

There have been no arrests.
