Bay has "shockingly high FAS statistic"

Thirteen percent of all grade one learners in Nelson Mandela Bay's Northern Areas are affected by Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and have irreversible brain damage, the Foundation of alcohol related research revealed this morning.

Foundation for Alcohol-Related Research (FARR) chief executive Leana Olivier said this statistic is incredibly and shockingly high - the highest found by any other research team in the country.

Women who drink alcohol during pregnancy can give birth to babies with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.  Children affected by severe Foetal Alcohol Syndrome have life-long learning and behavioural conditions.
