DA to challenge whether ANC can use majority to 'absolve a criminal'

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane says the DA is to challenge whether the ANC can use its majority to “absolve a criminal”.

He said he had asked the party’s legal team to “take all the necessary action.”

Maimane was campaigning in Soweto‚ a day after the DA failed in Parliament to have President Jacob Zuma removed from office for allegedly violating the Constitution and forsaking his oath of office.

The National Assembly‚ where the ANC has a 62% majority‚ rejected the DA motion by 243 votes to 143. There are 400 members of the national assembly in total.

Maimane accused the ANC of violating the Constitution and their oath of office by using their majority to block the motion.

He said he had convened a meeting with opposition parties on Tuesday evening and would be engaging with unions‚ churches and other structures on mass action to campaign for Zuma’s removal.
