JUST IN: MBDA board dissolved with immediate effect

The representative members of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) have‚ through a resolution and notice‚ dissolved the board of the MBDA with immediate effect.

Communications and media management officer Mthubanzi Mniki said on Tuesday the decision was taken at a board meeting held at the agency offices on Monday.

“The original appointment of the board was not done in terms of section 93E of the Municipal Systems Act‚ which compels the appointment of the board to be made by council‚” he said.

“In the interim‚ Ashwin Daya will be the acting CEO and accounting officer respectively‚” Mniki said.

“Effectively‚ Daya will dispense with operational issues. The MBDA will start a process to call for nominations for a new board of directors. The municipality would like to thank the outgoing board for their contribution during their tenure‚” Mniki said.

Last week‚ what appeared to be an amicably reached truce between the Mandela Bay Development Agency board and the municipality over the fate of MDBA boss Pierre Voges collapsed‚ after he was suddenly given his marching orders.

The MBDA under Voges has been praised for its urban regeneration work in the city.

“For the past 12 years he has led a team which built a professional organisation boasting not only a strong administration and financial management culture‚ but displays a relentless appetite to turn neglected and underdeveloped parts of this city into thriving tourism economic centres‚” TMG newspaper the Herald said in an editorial comment on Voges in February.
