Woman, 60, battered to death with golf club

A GEORGE man is expected to appear in court today for allegedly beating a 60-year old woman to death with a golf club during a vicious daylight attack in the town at the weekend.

Southern Cape police spokesman Captain Malcolm Pojie said Kaatjie Lampbrecht and a friend had been sitting on the pavement in Formosa Drive in Groeneweide Park just before 2pm on Saturday when a bakkie stopped next to them.

“A man – a passenger in the bakkie – jumped out of the vehicle and approached them with a golf club in his hands,” Pojie said.

The man then allegedly started whacking Lampbrecht over the head with the club. She was also hit in the side and on the back.

The woman’s friend was not attacked.

“He then got back into the bakkie and it drove off,” Pojie said. Lampbrecht died at the scene.

Police launched a search for the perpetrator and a man, aged 43, was arrested on a nearby pig farm within 30 minutes of the attack.

He said a golf club covered in blood had also been found in the bakkie in which the suspect had allegedly been a passenger.

The motive for the attack was still unknown.

Eden police cluster commander Major-General Oswald Reddy commended the officers for their swift action.

The suspect is expected to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court today.
