Baby dies after drinking household chemicals

An inquest docket has been opened after a 16-month-old baby from Sedgefield died yesterday (17-02-16) after consuming household chemicals concealed in a juice bottle.

Alexis Mitchell’s distraught mother Andrea Mitchell said the little girl had drunk the chemicals when the family was visiting friends on Tuesday evening.

Knysna police spokesman Constable Chris Spies said an inquest docket had been opened following the child’s death.

“The investigation into this matter is at an early stage. A post-mortem to determine the cause of death will be conducted shortly. The investigation continues,” Spies said.
