A spectator was injured when a tent collapsed as a result of gusty winds at the IsiXhosa Music Festival in Port Elizabeth today.
During the festival, held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the spectator was assessed on site by medical emergency personnel but was later taken to hospital for further tests.
According to a media statement, the marquee was installed by an experienced events company and was signed off by a reputable civil engineer.
“We as the event organisers can confirm that we were compliant with the Safety at Sports and Recreation Events Act of 2010 (SASREA) and all the necessary certification documents were produced” said Mazizi Msutu, President of City of Champions.
A decision was taken by disaster management to have the marquee taken down due to the continuous windy weather condition.
“The injured spectator is doing well and a detailed report will be given at a later stage,” Msutu added.
