Bay refuse truck crisis
Twenty new compactors required
THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality needs 20 new refuse compactors to fully roll out weekly waste collection in all areas of the metro.
The city has a number of refuse removal trucks which have long since passed their five- to seven-year life span and have to be scrapped. The municipality has, since July, increased refuse collections from fortnightly to weekly in some parts of the northern areas, New Brighton, Kwazakhele, Zwide and sections of Kwa- Nobuhle – areas considered illegal dumping hotspots.

A report to the municipal public accounts committee, which met yesterday, states: “A further five refuse compactor vehicles will be added to the refuse collection fleet by the end of December . . . as the three oldest vehicles will be scrapped due to recurrent repairs. -Rochelle de Kock
