A 26-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of abalone estimated to the value of R1. 5 million between Uniondale and Willowdale yesterday (01/11/2015).
The suspect was driving a Nissan 1-Tonner when Western Cape Rural Flying Squad members who were busy with a stop and search roadblock about 23km outside of Uniondale, pulled over the vehicle. They discovered 73 bags of abalone concealed under mattresses on the back of the vehicle.
The suspect has since been detained at the Uniondale police cells and is expected to appear in court tomorrow (03/11/ 2015).
The Eden Cluster commander, Major General Oswald Reddy said main and secondary routes in the area will be closely monitored by different units to halt criminals acts.
