HUNDREDS of students protesting against tuition fee hikes blockaded entrances to Rhodes University in Grahamstown with burning tyres, rocks and furniture from early yesterday, effectively halting all academic programmes at the institution.
The protests, which started in earnest around dawn, mirrored those at the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, which also saw total academic shutdowns over tuition fees yesterday.
