A SENIOR Department of Home Affairs official was arrested yesterday for alleged corruption and appeared briefly in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Pretoria-based immigration office assistant director Elisha Matsipa, 43, was arrested by the Hawks after he allegedly assisted Pakistani national Wahdat Hussain, 30, in fraudulently obtaining a South African passport, identity document, and a marriage certificate.

“Initial investigations show that Matsipa had allegedly received an amount of R23 000 from Hussain,” Hawks’ spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said. Hussain, who was arrested two days ago, appeared in court yesterday with Matsipa. Both are being detained for several days for formal bail applications.

Hawks’ acting head Major-General Mthandazo Ntlemeza congratulated his team for the arrest and assisting with rooting out corruption within the Department of Home Affairs.

“We have a strong case against the two and this shows that our investigating officials were on point throughout the process,” he said.

“We also applaud the Home Affairs Department for taking a brave step in isolating even one of their own to root out fraud and corruption within the ranks.”
