Three women and a teenage boy were killed on Monday in a four-vehicle crash on the N2 highway between Umtentweni and Hibberdene about 10km north of Port Shepstone.
KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Mckenzie said a bus‚ bakkie‚ SUV and car were involved in the horrific crash.
Beach toys and fishing rods were scattered on the road near the mangled vehicles.
“The crash left all of the light motor vehicles severely damaged. The crash scene was spread out over about 250m metres of the high way and the highway had to be closed for several hours‚ while the scene was being cleared.”
Mckenzie said seven people were injured.
“Two of the patients were critically injured and five patients had sustained serious injuries. Fortunately several people on board the bus were not injured. The patients were transported to several hospitals in the area including Port Shepstone hospital for continued medical care‚” he said.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established.
