Soccer fan shot by police at NMB stadium

A man was shot and killed by police at the PSL match between Kaizer Chiefs and  Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tonight (09/05/15) when he tried to take a firearm from a policeman.

Chaos erupted following the match when a large number of fans stormed the field.

Police spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder told The Herald there was an altercation between a fan and a policeman during the pitch invasion.

“The man tried to take the policeman’s gun and during the scuffle the gun went off and the person was shot,” Rheeder said.

The unidentified man died on the scene.

Police are still on the scene and an investigation is underway.
