Blankets of Mandela Day smash world record

The campaign ‘67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day’ smashed a Guinness World Record yesterday for the biggest handmade blanket yet.

At 3 133m² stitched together, the cover – made from thousands of blankets from around South Africa, including more than 100 from Port Elizabeth – is three times the size of a previous one.

With the backing of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the blankets will go to the needy. Foundation chief executive Sello Hatang said: ‘This is a proud moment for all involved.

The campaign shows we can survive anything that comes our way, including inequality and xenophobia.’
