R140k perlemoen confiscated near Mthatha

Almost R140 000 worth of perlemoen  was seized and a rental car confiscated at Ndibela location near Mthatha at about 7am this morning (21/04/15).

Police spokesman Colonel Sibongile Soci said police officers were on patrol when they spotted the rental car, a Toyota Quantum, and noticed the occupants were acting suspiciously.

“It is alleged that the members spotted  the vehicle on a gravel road which is a bypass to Ngcobo. When the occupants of the vehicle saw the police, they abandoned the Toyota Quantum and fled on foot. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the members discovered sea products and members of the Mthatha K9 Protected and Endangered Species contacted the abalone.”

Soci said that 2 699 abalone was recovered inside the vehicle.

“We commend the members who made the recovery. This is an indication that our members are attentive when they are doing the patrols and crime prevention operations. Criminals who think they will use the gravel bypass roads in commissioning of crime are also warned, ” Bityi Police Station Commander Colonel Maphelo Ngame said.

No arrests have yet been made.
