Bay residents shocked by fallout from factory

AN INDUSTRIAL accident at a Port Elizabeth factory caused “black rain” to fall on Amsterdamhoek and Bluewater Bay at the weekend.

Inky deposits of pure carbon powder – the same material used to manufacture tyres – fell on buildings and cars.

As the carbon was spread by stormy weather, it also blackened swimming-pool water.

A number of residents have complained that the powder is almost impossible to remove.

Orion Engineered Carbons – known through various name changes as “the carbon black factory” – in Deal Party took responsibility for the accident yesterday.
