Man in court for supplying rhino poachers with rifles

The case of a man arrested for allegedly stealing ammunition and illegally altering firearms was postponed in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court, the Hawks said on Wednesday (04/03/15).

Calvin Meshack Mbuyane , 52, was arrested by the Gauteng Hawks earlier this week for a string of allegations.

“Mbuyane, employed as a general gunsmith labourer, was allegedly altering firearms, as numerous hand tools were found at his house as well as visible alterations to pieces of firearms found in his possession,” said Hawks national spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Mbuyane allegedly supplied rhino poachers with ammunition and repaired their weapons. He was arrested on Tuesday after his employer notified police that he suspected Mbuyane was stealing ammunition from him.

His suspicions were apparently confirmed by CCTV footage.

“The suspect admitted to having stolen the rounds and led the police to a house of a man he claimed to have been the intended recipient of the ammunition,” said Mulaudzi.

Gauteng police are still searching for the suspected buyers of the weapons and ammunition.

Mbuyane will remain in custody until Monday when he will reappear in the same court.
