Eastern Cape to host services for DJ Mbixane

Saba Mbixane

THREE memorial services will be held in the Eastern Cape this week for Umhlobo Wenene FM DJ, Saba Mbixane, with a fourth in Durban.

The three in the province were announced by the Eastern Cape government, radio station management and family of the popular DJ.

Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina announced a “week of celebrating Mbixane’s life”.

The 54-year-old father of four died on Thursday following a motorbike accident. He will be buried at Mandileni village in Mount Frere on Sunday.

“We are not mourning Saba, but celebrating the life of a man who dedicated his life to promoting African traditional music when it was not fashionable to do so,” Majodina said.

The memorial services will be held at Port Elizabeth’s Nongoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton at 5pm today, Sikhenjana Roji Hall in Bhisho at midday tomorrow, and at 9am on Thursday at the Mthatha 2010 Legacy Stadium.

The funeral on Sunday starts at 8am. Mourners are urged to wear traditional attire.
